Maria James

Practicing Sport and Regular Physical Activity and How Long You’ve Been Involved in Sport?

I am a Special Olympics Athlete and have been a keen swimmer for the past 7 years.  Throughout the past years, I have represented my country in various swimming competitions both locally and abroad.  My next challenge is being part of the team which will represent Malta in the Abu Dhabi World Games next March.

Dedication and commitment have helped me become a better athlete.  Every day, I work out hard and take training sessions very seriously.  Through sports, I have developed my potential and have learnt to believe in myself and in what I can achieve.  I have learnt to persist and keep going during difficult moments, without letting bullying get me down.   I have also made a lot of friends and learnt how to live a healthy lifestyle.

My message to persons with a disability like me is to never let anyone bully them and stop them from achieving what they desire.  I am a true example of this.  Sports is for everyone and everyone has a right to engage and succeed in sports.

Practicing Sport and Regular Physical Activity and How Long You’ve Been Involved in Sport?

I have been in the sport of weightlifting for almost 3 years now, but I have always practiced some kind of sport throughout my life.

I believe that my participation in sports throughout my life has really shaped my character to be what it is today. In general, I approach life with a very positive attitude.

In weightlifting, I’ve worked very hard to get to where I am and I have had to sacrifice a lot of things. However, I’ve also done it with a lot of love and passion.

I have recently graduated from university with a degree in Maths & Statistics, and I credit my participation in sports for my success in doing so. It helped me approach my studies in a similar way of how I approached my sport. With enough hard work, preparation and most importantly love and passion, you are bound to be successful in anything you do.

Participating in sports has a positive influence in many areas. It supports positive mental health and improves social skills along with promoting physical health. Participating in sports develops healthy living habits that provide physical benefits such as developing  physical fitness, and strength

Sport and regular physical activity are an important part of our daily lives as these indeed enhance our quality of life. Physical activity, in particular, is associated with improved self-esteem. Research shows that this has a significant impact on our mental health and, in turn, our physical health.  Physical activity can help us live longer as research indicates that regular exercise can add up to five years to one’s life. Sport and physical activity help to keep us in shape so we can enjoy leisure activities and safely perform work and home chores. It offers great mental and social benefits as well. A series of studies attribute positive outcomes to physical activity including a sense of purpose, improved sleep, stress reduction as well as improved relationships and social connectedness. On the other hand, lack of physical activity is associated with increased risks of anxiety, stress, and feelings of depression as well as the development of many preventable conditions. A lack of sport and physical activity in one’s life often implies a sedentary lifestyle which is so common in our culture as proven by the high levels of obesity in the Maltese population.
